TLC Cancels ’19 Kids and Counting’
Following the sexual abuse scandal that surfaced surrounding Josh Duggar a few months ago, the Duggar family received a lot of criticism. 19 Kids and Counting has appeared on TLC for over ten years, following the family’s lives and highlighting how they’ve used the Bible to solve life’s problems. In a statement from TLC this morning, the network said
“After thoughtful consideration, TLC and the Duggar family have decided to not move forward with 19 Kids and Counting. The show will no longer appear on the air.
The recent attention around the Duggars has sparked a critical and important conversation about child protection.”
TLC plans to continue that conversation in a 1 hour documentary special featuring Jill and Jessa, two of the daughters who were victims of the sexual abuse, as well as other families dealing with incest and sexual abuse, in an effort to make a positive impact out of this negative situation. The documentary will be commercial-free and is being produced in cooperation with leading victims’ rights and advocacy organizations RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network) and Darkness to Light.
This cancellation is a huge shakeup for TLC. 19 Kids and Counting has been a staple of the network’s viewership for over 10 years, so the decision was obviously not an easy one to make, but undoubtedly the right one.
In a statement on the family blog this morning by Michelle Duggar, the family matriarch, she expressed her gratitude to the show’s fans, her hope that the upcoming documentary with TLC will bring positive change, and reiterated her faith in god. “It is our prayer that the painful situation our family went through many years ago can point people toward faith in God and help others who also have lived through similar dark situations to find help, hope and healing, as well.”
