2 Wars, 4 Kids and Life Got In The Way
After 66 years and two wars, veteran Ralph Wozniak finally was able to take his dream date to the prom — his wife Laverne.
The 89-year-old enlisted in the Marine Corps back in 1944, so before the big event came around the first time Wozniak was shipped overseas to fight in World War II. “I couldn’t make the prom, and I couldn’t finish high school,” Ralph told ABC.
But then Wozniak missed the prom for the second time after being deployed to fight in the Korean War — which is when he decided that some things just aren’t meant to be. “That really put a snap on it.”
Life moved on past tiaras and tuxes for the couple, and before they knew it they were married with four children — who all had the opportunity to attend their own respective proms. As Ralph watched each of them take off for their one special night he thought, “Why the hell couldn’t we go to the prom?”
So, 66 years later, the dutiful couple finally had their chance to have their own “night of a lifetime” at the Hillsborough County Aging Services Senior Prom.
The pièce-de-résistance? Ralph was even awarded prom King of the event. “To be chosen as the king. That was even a plus sign,” Ralph said.
Laverne said, “I got out of my line and gave him a kiss because I said, ‘That’s my husband, that’s the king.’”
Dreams really do come true — even if it takes a while. And after 6 decades, these two deserve it.
It took them over 6 decades to finally have their “night of a lifetime.”
