Ok, we know that Sam Smith technically owned music’s biggest evening, shuffling off with four Grammy’s including Best New Artist, Record of the Year and Song of the Year — but the brightest star on the stage was a little more unexpected.
Not Beyonce, not Sam Smith, not even Katy Perry’s surprisingly on-point vocals, but Annie Lennox. The 60-year-old Scotswoman teamed up with newcomer Hozier, and at the end of their 2015 hit “Take Me to Church” (after an understated, over-instrumented duet,) Lennox casually pulled out of her back pocket the evening’s most solid performance. The song choice: Jay Hawkins’ “I Put a Spell on You.”
The song takes guts to perform in the first place, but no one was quite prepared to see Lennox so confidently slay the standard,…and we mean chew it up, savor every single note, and serve it back to the audience with as much soul as anyone’s ever seen produced on the Grammy stage.
The song is featured on her sixth studio album release, the 2014 release Nostalgia, in which Lennox pays tributes to some of her favorites.
Check out the performance above, and then remind yourself of how much you like her old stuff with “Walking on Broken Glass” below:
