A few weeks ago during PRIDE week here in NYC, PressRoomVIP was invited by Lifebeat to exclusively cover the KYSS (KNOW YOUR STATUS STAGE) Concert at the Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn. The concert featured a mix of rising hip hop artists which included, Bodega Bamz, A$AP Ferg, Flatbush ZombiesPo Johnson, and DJ Zeke Thomas.

Lifebeat, hosting the event, admitted fans for free on one condition, they must get tested for HIV.  In partnership with AHF at selected testing centers across the five boroughs, Lifebeat provided a 20 day period (prior to the concert) for millennials to go get tested and in return they would receive a personalized voucher to gain admission. The concept was a resounding success, with youth showing up in droves to the selected testing centers.

So why the need for KYSS? Many youth have never been tested, are not being treated, and may unknowingly be spreading the disease. In fact the CDC reports that over 1,000 young people (ages 13-24) are newly infected with HIV each month in the U.S., this is an increase of nearly 20% from previous reports. Many health professionals talk to milliennials about the importance of getting tested, but most youth still think of HIV as a disease of a past generation and think it will never affect them. In order to get across the message, “get tested and know your status,” Lifebeat produces live music performances, a point of greatest common interest amongst youth.

So millennials, do you know your status? Getting tested is easy, free (in at several locations) and can take up to as little as twenty minutes. Trust me, while “going viral” is in, HIV/AIDS is something no one wants to go viral.
