Brooklyn-based, Canada-born DJ A-Trak released a hot new single called “Push” earlier this month, and came in to chat exclusively with PressroomVIP about the song’s release and his views on the development of the EDM community in the U.S.
A collaboration with musician Andrew Wyatt, the song boasts the simple message, “Yeah, it’s a horrible thing to push love away.” It would be an even more horrible thing not to start blasting this catchy song.
Following the founding of his record label Fool’s Gold with fellow DJ Nick Catchdubs in 2007, A-Trak has introduced us to plenty of musical artists such as Kid Cudi. But A-Trak’s renown goes back farther than that.
Before his 20th birthday, A-Trak became the first person to win the trifecta of DJ Championships: the Disco Mix Club’s (DMC) World DJ Championship in 1997, the Vestax World DJ Extravaganza Championship in 1999, and the International Turntablist Federation (ITF) World Championship in 2000. A-Trak was only 15 when he won the DMC Championship, making him the youngest ever to win that title.
In 2004, Kanye West chose A-Trak to be his personal tour DJ, and the two have collaborated on several albums since then.
In 2009, A-Trak and fellow DJ Arman van Helden formed Duck Sauce, a New York-based duo famous for their award winning breakthrough hit “Barbara Streisand” in 2010.
Finally, in 2013, A-Trak teamed up with DJ Tommy Trash to release a video for “Tuna Melt,” which features what is quite possibly the coolest Rube Goldberg machine of all time. The video earned a nomination for Best Cinematography at the 2013 MTV VMAs.
Outside of music, A-Trak is an important streetwear icon, having endorsed brands and companies such as New Era, Nike, and Zoo York.
Although he placed 7th in 2013’s America’s Best DJ Competition, A-Trak is an undeniable fan favorite known for his ability to blend electronic music and hip hop into one sweet final product.
If you haven’t listened yet, definitely check out “Push.” The track is currently available on Spotify, and will be available on iTunes on Nov. 25th!
