Yesterday (Oct. 23) a man with a hatchet charged police officers and attacked them as they were standing around in a commercial district of Queens.
The man, later identified as 32-year-old Zale Thompson, injured two police officers before being shot and killed. One police officer remains in critical condition with a head injury.
Also, a bystander was wounded in the gunfire.
Thompson, who lived in Queens, left behind a Facebook page with a default pic of a radical Muslim soldier and a background with an Arabic phrase from the Koran. With these, along with several incendiary and racist comments Thompson left on a variety of Youtube videos, it was determined by officials that Thompson was an extremist.
This event comes just two days after an extremist in Canada opened gunfire, killing a soldier in Parliament in Ottowa. The two cannot be proved to be linked together just yet, but suspicions are rising.
All New York police officers have been put on alert to “maintain a heightened level of awareness against random attacks.”
