Expect the Unexpected
Sweden Beats Belgium
Even though they didn’t win the gold medal, the Swedish soccer team stunned Belgium in the 1924 Paris Olympics. The Belgium soccer team was coming off a gold at the 1920 Summer Olympics, and they were heavily favored to repeat. Sweden jumped out to an early lead in the game, but in a crazy game, Sweden crushed Belgium by a score of 8-1. Two players scored hat tricks in the blowout. Sweden ended up grabbing a bronze medal in these Olympics.
Mary Lou Retton
Many people don’t remember this, but before 1984, every gold medalist in the women’s gymnastics all-around competition was from an Eastern European country. That changed when Mary Lou Retton stepped into the building. She upset a group of super talented Romanian gymnasts and won the sport’s highest honor.
Argentina Beats the USA
The USA men’s basketball team has only failed to win the gold medal one time since 1992, and that was when they were upset by Argentina back in 2004 in Athens. The USA team was filled with superstars like Carmelo Anthony, Tim Duncan, Allen Iverson, LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Amare Stoudemire and Carlos Boozer. Unfortunately, that wasn’t enough.
Argentina had a squad with prime Manu Ginobili, and he led the team with 29 points in the game. Nobody believed they could do it, but Argentina won and knocked the USA out of the semifinal game. They would eventually win the gold medal, their first in Men’s Basketball.
Upsets happen in every sport, but when it happens in the Olympics its a bigger deal.
