There's A War Raging In The Music Industry, And Artists Are Taking Sides
By now it’s pretty much common knowledge that Kesha, the musical genius behind hits like “Tik Tok,” “We R Who We R,” and “Timber” has been locked up in a legal battle with mentor and music industry hitmaker Dr. Luke. In 2014 Kesha Rose Sebert, known as Kesha, filed a lawsuit against Dr. Luke claiming that the music mogul “sexually, physically, verbally and emotionally abused” her when she signed onto his label at just 18.
Just last week, a photo of Kesha sobbing in the courtroom went viral after a judge ruled that Kesha would not be able to exit her contract with Sony. Justice Shirley Werner Kornreich stated that “You’re asking the court to decimate a contract that was heavily negotiated and typical for the industry.”
Even though TECHNICALLY Kesha can continue to work under her Sony contract with producers other than Dr. Luke, her legal team is worried that her music won’t be fairly promoted because of Dr. Luke’s immense influence. “Kesha Rose Sebert wants nothing more than to be able to record an album,” her lawyers wrote in an opening statement to the hearing. “Her only condition is that she be allowed to record with a record label that is not affiliated with someone who has emotionally and sexually abused her.”
Now, Kesha’s career remains in a deadlock, and it’s all thanks to a legal system that institutionally supports rape culture.
But people are outraged, and fans and celebrities alike have taken to social media to show their support for Kesha. However, after Taylor Swift made a shocking surprise donation of $250,000 to Kesha, stars began crawling out of the woodwork to take sides in the controversial issue, and not all of them were so nice about it! (I’m looking at you, Demi Lovato)
