GERD stands for gastroesophageal reflux disease. The disease happens when your stomach acids start to flow in the wrong direction, and back into the tube that connects your throat to your stomach, the esophagus. This is something known as acid reflux, but when it happens often and doesn’t get better — that’s when it becomes classified as GERD. Some telling symptoms include chest pains, coughs, and trouble swallowing.
