Mariah talks changed beliefs, causes, and "lifestyle!"
Back in the day…
If you recall, at the beginning of the show’s run Mariah was among the most religious of her siblings and the most certain that she wanted to continue within “The Lifestyle.”
All that changed while Mariah was in college, though, and the Brown’s most religious child slowly shifted into their most bad-ass, radical, socially conscious child. Gone are the days when she identified with the church first, now Mariah says she considers her “biggest definer'” to be her belief in intersectional feminism.
Years of Struggle
Mariah also told TLC that it was only after beginning college that she was able to really begin thinking about her sexuality at all.
“I remember being quite a bit younger and sitting in my room… thinking about how I couldn’t even think about being gay because, if I did, then my biggest fears would be true. Even in high school I remember liking a girl but telling myself that I couldn’t be gay. I was constantly coming up with excuses and reasons to justify my feelings,” she said of her experience coming to terms with her queer identity.
Mariah also said that once she figured things out she “decided pretty early on that [she] wanted [her] family to know.” She explained that her family is very open and honest with each other and that prospect of not being herself with those she loved most was an impossibility.
“I wanted to be able to be who I am when I’m with them,” she concluded.
