Breaking the Barrier
Cassius Clay Becomes Muhammad Ali
Right after he beat Sonny Liston in an upset, Cassius Clay announced that he would be joining the Nation of Islam and that he would be changing his name to Muhammad Ali.
Three years later he resisted the draft because of religious reasons during the Vietnam War. Other athletes had done this before, but few were as polarizing as Muhammad Ali.
The platform of being a great athlete can help change the world, and these athletes, in particular, did a great job at making an impact on the race barrier.
