Did That Really Just Happen?
The question on everyone’s lips preceding the Oscars wasn’t who was going to win Best Actor – never let go (of that statue) Leo – but rather how was Chris Rock was going to handle the entire #OscarsSoWhite controversy that’s blanketed the entire award show season? Would he mention it briefly in the beginning, ignore the subject entirely? Not a chance. Instead, Chris Rock dedicated the entire evening to the subject of racism in the industry. “Damn right Hollywood is racist,” concluded Rock after a razor sharp opening monologue, after which he featured parodic clips of black actors attempting to score roles in the biggest oscar flicks.
“We want opportunity,” Rock concluded. “We want black actors to get the same opportunities.”
But not only did Rock go after the industries diversity problems, he also slammed some of the reactions to entire controversy, including Will and Jada Pinkett Smith’s boycott of the whole event, and some other lesser known actor’s responses to the blowout, including actress Stacey Dash, who SOMEHOW ended up onstage in this extremely awkward joke…
THIS MAKES ME FEEL SO UNCOMFORTABLE.
