JJ Murphy, 86, died on-set during day 4 of shooting the fifth season of the hit HBO series, Game Of Thrones. Murphy was just starting to film his first scenes when the incident happened.
Murphy died while playing the oldest member of the Night’s Watch, Ser Denys Mallister. He collapsed and died suddenly on Friday, August 8th. D.B. Weiss and David Benioff, the creators of the show, informed The Independent:
“We will not be recasting J.J. Murphy. He was a lovely man, and the best Denys Mallister we could have hoped for. And now his watch is ended.”
Murphy also had a part in the upcoming film Dracula Untold. It sure is hard to fill his acting shoes. The loss of this actor has left the movie world in shock. Actress and fellow Equity member Maggie Cronin said in tribute:
“His passion for theatre, for the welfare and betterment of actors and those who worked in the performing arts was always there. It was an integral part of the man.”
As long-standing member of actor’s union Equity, Murphy obtained several other film credits, including amazing performances in Angela’s Ashes, Cal and Mickybo and Me. However, “he was best known for his work on the stage, having trained with the Ulster Group Theatre School in 1948.”
Having been born in Belfast, the Northern Irish theater vet will retire his career forever serving the Iron Throne. Murphy’s agent is left grieving with just a few words. He said to E! News:
“I am heartbroken to pass on the news that the wonderful J.J. Murphy passed away this morning 8th August 2014. I had the pleasure and honor to be his Agent for the last 18 months and have never encountered a man with more spirit, passion and love for his craft. At this time our thoughts are with his family.”
Murphy is survived by his wife, Mary, and his two children, Joseph and Jane.
