The 5th Annual Governors Awards honored Angelina Jolie, Steve Martin, Angela Lansbury, and Piero Tosi last week (Nov. 26) at the Hollywood & Highland Center’s Ray Dolby Ballroom. The evening focused on the amazing, unique careers and lives of the four honorees. The Academy‘s President Cheryl Boone Isaacs raised a toast to these outstanding artists along with many of the film industry’s elite: Amy Adams, Colin Farrell, Jennifer Garner, Jake Gyllenhaal, Matthew McConaughey, Brad Pitt, Ben Stiller, Mark Wahlberg, and many more.

Angelina Jolie was as beautiful and poised as ever. Jolie graciously accepted the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award and gave a very moving and emotional speech. She first gave thanks to her family and made a special dedication to her late mother Marcheline Bertrand.

Jolie then segued into what confounds her: “I have never understood why some people are lucky enough to be born with the chance that I had, to have this path in life. And why across the world there’s a women just like me, with the same abilities, same desires, same work ethic and love for her family. Who would most likely make better films and better speeches. Only she sits in a refugee camp, and she has no voice. She worries about what her children will eat, how to keep them safe, and if they’ll ever be allowed to return home. I don’t know why this is my life and that’s hers, I don’t understand that…and I will do the best I can with this life to be of use.”

Both Martin Short and Tom Hanks presented Steve Martin’s honorary Oscar. Tom Hanks said, “it is my pleasure to present this Academy honorary award, in recognition of his extraordinary talents and for the unique inspiration he has brought to the art of motion pictures, to Mr. Steve Martin.” Martin received his honorary Oscar, lit the room up with laughter, and warmed everyone’s heart.

Angela Lansbury was overjoyed receiving her honorary Oscar. Lansbury exclaimed, “You can’t imagine how happy and proud indeed I feel, really undeserving of this gorgeous, golden chap. I want to thank the Governors honorary Oscar from the Academy tonight. To be here in the company of my beloved family and friends…let me tell you, it doesn’t get much better than that!”

Highlights from the evenings honors will also be presented during the 86th Academy Awards on March 2nd.
