Grumpy Cat’s Career Challenged by New K-9 Rival

Sunday Funday.

Meet Earl. Earl is a puppy, and, like many puppies, he is ridiculously adorable. But there’s a twist. While many other puppies look happy and energetic, Earl looks mad. Real mad.

Earl may not have the cult following that Grumpy Cat has, but when his picture was posted on Reddit a few weeks back, it quickly racked up more than two million hits. It wasn’t long before internet trolls were creating hilarious memes based on Earl’s steadfast expression. And it’s not hard to believe. I mean, just LOOK at that face.

Earl’s owner’s name is Derek Bloomfield, 25, of Iowa. Bloomfield has assured audiences that Earl’s grumpy face conceals his true inner joy. He’s perky, friendly, and excited just like any other pup. His mean face is due in part to his breed — a beagle/pug mix known as a muggle —as well as his underbite, which creates the permanent frown face.

“He has had the grumpy expression from day one,” Bloomfield said. “The vet said he’s as healthy as any other puppy. He just looks grumpy because of his underbite, wrinkles, and dark complexion.” And you can bet your socks that Earl doesn’t only garner reactions on the internet, but out on the mean streets as well. Bloomfield said “People usually say ‘Oh my god, he is so cute,’ ‘Is he always that grumpy?’ Usually a combination of those two phrases and laughter.”

Is it bedtime yet???
