After publicly discussing her struggles with postpartum depression, actress Hayden Panettiere has announced that she’s decided to seek professional treatment. Hayden “is voluntarily seeking professional help at a treatment center as she is currently battling postpartum depression,” her rep tells People.com.

“She asks that the media respect her privacy during this time.”

When Hayden Panettiere appeared on Live! With Kelly and Michael last week to talk about her character on Nashville, the conversation quickly moved to similarities between her and her character, Juliette, who in the most recent season, is seen suffering from postpartum depression. “I can very much relate. It’s something a lot of women experience. When [you hear] about postpartum depression, you think it’s ‘I feel negative feelings towards my child; I want to injure or hurt my child.’ I’ve never, ever had those feelings. Some women do.”

Panettiere gave birth to her first daughter, Kaya, in December 2014, with fiancé, heavyweight champion boxer Wladimir Klitschko (pictured above).

Panettiere went on to describe how postpartum depression is a common problem for women, and that it means a lot of different things for different women. “You don’t realize how broad of a spectrum you can really experience that on. It’s something that needs to be talked about. Women need to know that they’re not alone, and that it does heal.”

While Hayden Panettiere isn’t a medical professional and doesn’t open up about too many specifics on her experience with postpartum depression, for someone in her position to open up about their personal struggle helps to break down the stigma surrounding the topic and allows others to speak openly knowing that they’re not alone.

You go, Panettiere! We’ll keep you in our thoughts as you move through this tough period in your life.
