One of the most talked about stories from the music world this week surrounded the rumor that Katy Perry was writing a new song, “1984,” in response to Taylor Swift‘s no. 1 hit “Bad Blood,” which was rumored to have been written about Katy. Perry’s representatives have confirmed that that the rumor was just that – a rumor.

According to one of Perry’s reps, “Katy Perry’s managers at Direct Management Group confirm that this story is completely false. Katy Perry was not involved in writing, singing, recording or registering this song.”

It’s no mystery that there’s been some tension between the pop stars over the years. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Taylor hinted that “Bad Blood” was written about an incident in which Katy Perry tried to hire some of Taylor’s backup dancers out from under her mid-tour. And this wasn’t the first time rumors of a feud between Swift and Perry have circulated the internet. Perry began dating Swift’s ex-boyfriend John Mayer in August 2012, and when Swift and Perry didn’t embrace at the 2013 Grammy awards, whispers began churning in the rumor mill about the potential “bad blood” between them.

Regardless of what consternation might exist between the girls, the story of Perry writing “1984” as a response to Swift’s “Bad Blood” is completely false.

This is a prime example of a story that got blown up in the Wild West of the internet. Luckily, both Swift and Perry were wise enough not to get caught up in the rumors, and their social media posts from the past few days have reflected their indifference.

While Swift has been swept up in the whirlwind of her 1989 tour, Perry has been vocal in her social activism, taking to twitter to respond to the viral story of police brutality against black teens that unfolded in Texas this week. These girls have more important things to attend to.

The jig is up! Rumors of Katy Perry writing song “1984” about Taylor Swift have been debunked.
