Laverne Cox isn’t afraid to show you what she’s made of, or who she represents. The Orange Is the New Black actress courageously decided to strip down for Allure magazine in an attempt to inspire the communities of people that look up to her – and she looks fabulous.

The Emmy nominee initially refused to pose au naturale for the magazine’s nude feature – twice! But after thinking about what it might mean to others, she decided to give the spread a second thought.

She’s officially the first trans person to appear in the Allure feature, one that’s been around for the last 15 years. “Black women are not often told that we’re beautiful unless we align with certain standards,” Cox says in the magazine’s May issue.

“Trans women certainly are not told we’re beautiful. Seeing a black transgender woman embracing and loving everything about her body might be inspiring for some folks. There’s a beauty in the things we think are imperfect. It sounds very cliché, but it’s true.”

Laverne has strengthened her role greatly as a spearhead for the transgender community over the last year, encouraging TIME to list her as one of the year’s 100 Most Influential People.

“Having someone as visible and strong as Laverne Cox to look up to is inspiring,” wrote 14-year-old Jazz Jennings for TIME. “She’s done so many amazing things— not just acting on Orange Is the New Black but also loving herself enough to share her story with the world. She’s a pioneer for our community.”

Posing for the magazine wasn’t about Laverne getting naked, but Laverne showing us that she’s unafraid to share all of herself, and she’s certainly disaffected by any negativity that could come her way – a message that needs to ring loud and clear at the forefront of pop-culture.
