Miley’s Happy Hippie Foundation and #InstaPride Campaign Give Voice to Younger LGBTQ Communities
Miley Cyrus has hit the ground running with her philanthropic ventures, and is now pushing even harder to breed acceptance, understanding, and education surrounding LGBT and gender non-conforming communities.
This week, Miley Cyrus has teamed up with social media mogul Instagram to launch a new campaign called #InstaPride, a hashtag that intends to spark conversation and sharing within the transgender community. “I’m launching #InstaPride today in partnership with @Instagram, to share stories of transgender and gender expansive people from around the country,” wrote Miley on her own account, which has a meagre 22.3 million followers. “Over the next 2 weeks, you’ll meet them and the people in their lives who support them, as we highlight their stories of resilience.”

22-year-old Miley, who is bisexual herself, plans on releasing stories from those who identify as transgender, trans, genderqueer and gender non-conforming in an effort to boost understanding and acceptance of what those words mean and who the people are that stand behind them.
Each person that Miley features through #InstaPride will have their own portrait and each post will include some insights into their identity. Ideally the campaign will gives others a forum in which they can share their own stories of gender identity under the #InstaPride hashtag.
Meet Tyler (@tywrent), a 24 year old living in New York City, and my date for @amfar tonight!!! Tyler is a queer, biracial, agender person, whose pronouns are they/them/theirs. Tyler shares about their identity, experiences and hopes saying: “My whole life, I was led to believe that there were only two genders. I thought I had to shrink myself to fit into a box that was never going to contain me. It took years for me to find words for my gender identity, and to feel comfortable expressing myself as I am.” 🌈🌈🌈💛💛💛💛💛💛 #happyhippiepresents #instapride @happyhippiefdn @instagram
The new campaign is umbrellaed under Miley’s brainchild, the Happy Hippie Foundation, which has the goal “to fight injustice facing homeless youth, LGBTQ youth and other vulnerable populations.” Check out some of the smiling faces that Miley’s helped to give a voice to, like Tyler and Leo.
Just keep being Miley, Miley. We love your work.
“I spent so much of my life uncomfortable with who I was and afraid to move because I didn’t want to stand out any more than I already did. This last year as I’ve been transitioning, there’ve been a lot of moments when I truly felt free to be myself: the moment I woke up from top surgery, the day the bandages came off, my first shot of testosterone. Sometimes, I’ll be out in public with my family or just hanging around with friends, and I remember that I’m no longer having to hide anything about who I am. I’m not afraid to move anymore and I know who I am. Everything about me right now is exactly as it should be.” – @isupersheng 🌈 #happyhippiepresents #instapride @happyhippiefdn
