Starting in 1989, the National Film Registry has been a collection of American films that are considered “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.” Each year, 25 films that are at least 10 years old are inducted into the NFR based on thousands of suggestions submitted by the general public.
The 650 movies in the National Film Registry range from full-length feature films to documentaries, short films, animated features, and even home videos. At the moment, the oldest film in the NFR is Newark Athlete from 1891, and the newest is 13 Lakes (2004), one of this year’s inductees.
