Neil Patrick Harris Honored for Musical Contribution to Broadway

The Drama League recognized and honored the well-known Golden Globe Nominee Neil Patrick Harris earlier this week on February 3, at the 30th Annual Musical Celebration of Broadway.

Several dozen celebrities from both Hollywood and Broadway were recognized, and to top things off, the event was hosted by Tony Award, Grammy, Emmy and Oscar winner Whoopi Goldberg. The one-night only event featured celebs based on musical selections found in Mr. Harris’s career stemming from his days in television and theater. Guest performers included Eddie Korbich, Anthony Rapp, Zachary Levi, Harvey Fierstein, Bryce Pinkham, James Barbour, Krysta Rodriguez, Kal Penn and many more. Tim Gunn even made a special appearance.

The entertainment provided during the event was co-directed by Michael Mayer, a Tony Award winner, as well as by Johanna McKeon. The Musical Celebration of Broadway was co-produced by Trevor Tamashiro and Roger Danforth.

Gabriel Shanks said that he is “overjoyed to add Neil Patrick Harris to the legendary roster of artists who have been honored at the Musical Celebration of Broadway…” He even went on to say “After distinguishing himself in film, television, theater, web series, music, and as a staunch advocate for youth and arts education like that provided by The Drama League, Neil’s return to Broadway this season is cause for celebration.” We couldn’t agree more. Harris has been a favorite of ours for years. Remember when he played in Doogie Howser, M.D.?

What’s Harris up to these days? He spends his days playing Barney Stinson on the much loved TV comedy “How I Met Your Mother.” In addition, it’s reported that he “will head the upcoming Broadway revival of Hedwig and the Angry Inch.”

There was more than just a few well known celebrities who attended the 30th Annual Musical Celebration of Broadway. In fact, the event boasted more than 500 people representing art supporters, Hollywood’s finest, and luminaries of many kinds, one of whom was Harris’s partner, David Burtka. Some of songs highlighted during the Musical Celebration of Broadway were chosen from Harris’s appearances in Tick, Tick, Boom!, Assassins, Rent, Sweeney Todd and more.
