In 2013, Hollywood had less shoot-’em-up and kill-’em movies than in years past and replaced thoughtless silver screen performances with some roles that would be Oscar worthy any year. One film — American Hustle– is so powerful, it has two actors and two actresses up for Oscars. Still, there is stiff competition for each award.
The 5 likeliest recipients of an Oscar in 2014 are:
5. Matthew McConaughey
For the Oscar for an actor in a leading role, Christian Bale should have more votes for his role in American Hustle than Leonardo DiCaprio gets for his in The Wolf of Wall Street. Nebraska’s Bruce Dern should have more votes than Bale. Chiwetel Ejiofor should have more than all three of them because of his performance in 12 Years a Slave and McConaughey should take home the award. His performance in Dallas Buyers Club is one for the ages.
McConaughey is on a roll. From his role in Mudd a few years back to the HBO hit True Detective he is currently starring in with Woody Harrelson, an Oscar would be just deserts.
2013 was a wonderful year for Hollywood- hence a great year for the 2014 Oscars- because of the diversity of the storylines, depth of plot and outstanding performances.
