One of the great icons of the 20th and 21st centuries passed away today (Dec. 5). At age 95 Nelson Mandela died from complications due to a recurring lung infection. Just prior to his death a vigil was held along with President Obama’s visit to the country to pay homage. President Obama decided not to visit Mandela and instead respectfully stood by to reflect on the man he considered his hero.

Mandela’s life’s work to end apartheid in South Africa and subsequently becoming the country’s first black president made him a national emblem and an international symbol of equality. Nelson Mandela’s tremendous legacy will long be felt and he will be immortalized within the pages of history.

Since the announcement of Mandela’s death there has been an outpour of reflection and admiration for him by celebrities on twitter.
