Taylor Swift is pretty much running the show these days. She’s managed to stay popular with her country-turned-pop smash hits since her debut on the pop charts in 2008, but it’s hard to deny that since the release of 1989, she’s been absolutely dominating. Her music videos have been gaining hundreds of millions of views faster than anyone else’s and she’s currently on a sold-out world tour for the album. All of this, not to mention the unfiltered voice she’s been raising in defense of musicians rights and the Oprah-esque acts of kindness she’s been performing for her fans.

Let’s take you back to 2009, a time when Taylor’s country roots still shone through while she belted out hits like “Love Story” and “You Belong With Me” from behind her guitar. It’s the VMAs and Taylor has just won the VMA for Best Female Video of the year for “You Belong With Me.” Enter Kanye West stage left, here to steal Taylor’s first big moment in the industry and remind everyone that “Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time.” True, Kanye, the “Single Ladies” video was off the chain, but that was just mean. Taylor’s high school love story video resonated with fans and she earned that moment. It’s not hard to believe that after that, Taylor wasn’t exactly a Kanye fan.

But in a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Taylor revealed that these days, she and Yeezy are operating on better terms, and we bet you can guess who’s responsible for patching the relationship:

“I feel like I wasn’t ready to be friends with [West] until I felt like he had some sort of respect for me, and he wasn’t ready to be friends with me until he had some sort of respect for me—so it was the same issue, and we both reached the same place at the same time,” Swift says. “I became friends with Jay Z, and I think it was important, for Jay Z, for Kanye and I to get along. . . . And then Kanye and I both reached a place where he would say really nice things about my music and what I’ve accomplished, and I could ask him how his kid’s doing.”

So there you have it. In addition to being arguably the most successful rapper in history and being married to THE Queen Bey, JAY Z spends his free time building bridges between other mega stars like it’s no problem. Okay JAY Z, we see you.

Do you think Kanye deserves Taylor’s forgiveness? That move at the VMAs was pretty harsh… SHARE this article with your friends so they can weigh in on the conversation!

I didn’t expect this person to be the reason Taylor and Kanye are now friends!
