Oprah Winfrey Celebrates 29 Years as Talk Show Queen
Oprah Winfrey officially began her takeover of the nation way back on September 8th, 1986 when she first aired The Oprah Winfrey Show. That’s right, Oprah first entered the public consciousness on this week 29 years ago, and her show has since become the standard for which all other talk shows have been measured, while Oprah herself became one of the most influential people in the world.
“I don’t think of myself as a poor deprived ghetto girl who made good. I think of myself as somebody who, from an early age, knew I was responsible for myself, and I had to make good.”
However, Oprah wasn’t always the Queen of Talk Television, she began her career as a local news anchor in Nashville before hosting her very first talkshow in Chicago in 1984. Oprah immediately flipped the show’s dismal ratings upside down, and it wasn’t long before she made friends in high places that insisted that she go national.
According to History.com, “at the urging of the Chicago-based movie critic Roger Ebert, Winfrey signed a syndication deal with King World and The Oprah Winfrey Show was broadcast nationally for the first time.”
The show would eventually become the highest-rated talk show in the history of television.
