Amazing Butterflies Drink Turtle Tears

As humans, we take for granted our ability to satisfy every whim. Thirsty? There are about 10 different drink options in the fridge! Hungry? The pantry is packed with goodies. In the animal kingdom, things like finding food and water are not so simple, and some animals have to get creative with their sources of sustenance.

Take these butterflies for example. Ama la Vida TV captured these amazing photos of a pair of Dryas iulia (Julia Butterflies) butterflies drinking from the tears of a few turtles in Ecuador. The way the photos captured the amazing beauty of nature didn’t go unrecognized, and won the 2014 Wikimedia Picture of the Year award. What’s more interesting, though, is that this tear-drinking phenomenon isn’t actually as rare as you might think!

The behavior is known as lachryphagy (tear drinking), and it’s one of the many ways a butterfly can get water and nutrients. See the amazing photos below, and make sure you SHARE this post with your friends! I bet they’ll be amazed too :)
