Being different isn’t always desirable when you’re a little kid. Having a visible disability like a hearing aid or cochlear implant makes a child stand out. Briton Sarah Ivermee decided to not only make them more kid friendly, but she made them really cool and the envy of other children by decorating them with kid-friendly things like Hello Kitty, Minions, and superheroes.
“I thought there would be a lot of families struggling with children who don’t want to wear their [hearing devices], and I felt I had to help,” she told The Mighty.
Inspired by her 4-year-old son Freddie, who is deaf in one ear and has hearing loss in the other, she created her own business and website called MyLugs — “Lugs” being another word for ear. There you can buy dozens of themes and decorations to jazz up your child’s earpiece. “Knowing children are not just happy to wear their hearing aids and cochlears but that they are proud to show them off makes it all worth while,” Ivermee said.
