Any sentence that includes the names Taylor Swift, Vladimir Putin, and Roger Goodell might sound like a bad bar joke, but what these three actually have in common is that they’ve all made the shortlist for Time’s Person of the Year.

The editors of the publication have narrowed down their list to the remaining eight cultural pillars listed below.

The title, according to the magazine, is given to an individual or group who, for better, or worse (so that’s why Kanye was on the original list,) has had the biggest impact on the world and news over the course of the past year.

Last year the 2013 title went to Pope Francis, and this year’s winner will be announced Wednesday (10 Dec.)

Click here to check out the remaining eight on the list– some might surprise you!

These are listed in no particular order.
