Kylie Jenner, Meet Caitlyn
As Caitlyn Jenner made it very clear in her ovation-worthy ESPY Awards acceptance speech for the Arthur Ashe Courage Award, one of her biggest fears in coming out as trans was not wanting to hurt anyone in her family. The Kardashian/Jenner clan looked on that evening, proud of the patriarch of their family, supporting him in his moment onstage – but what was it like for them to meet Caitlyn for the first time?
E! recently released a clip from the upcoming docuseries focusing on Bruce Jenner’s transition to Caitlyn I Am Cait, and the spot features the first moment when 17-year-old Kylie Jenner met Caitlyn. “Kylie’s the one we’re really worried about,” Bruce said to a friend on Keeping Up With the Kardashians. “She’s having a hard time dealing with this. I do everything I can to try to stay in touch but she doesn’t want to talk about it. She’s just shut me out lately.”
Clearly Kylie’s made some progress since Bruce made that comment, which is made proof-positive in promo video that was released on Today.
“I do want to meet her,” Kylie, who just graduated high school this week, admits in the video. “It will be a little bit uncomfortable in the beginning, but I think we’re both ready.”
The first meeting is actually a uncomfortable and understated, though overall very endearing — normal, considering the context of the situation. Kylie surprises Cait while she’s filming, and their introduction is brief.
“Hey, pretty!” says Kylie as she strolls into the room.
“Hey, baby,” a surprised Caitlyn responds. “I didn’t know you were here.” The two have a quick side-hug.
“You look so pretty,” Kylie repeats. Very sweet.
Caitlyn’s mother, Esther Jenner, is also in the room – which offers an opportunity to see three different generations of Jenner women all in one place.
While Kylie technically “met” Caitlyn for the first time via face time on their cell phones, the in-person moment offers an opportunity to see what kind of adjustments the entire family is making as they get more familiar with Cait.
We look forward to seeing the full series, which premiers this Sunday at 8PM on E!
