Long before the McConaissance, before even the days of endless rom-coms, there was Dazed and Confused.
Arguably one of the best coming-of-age movies of all time, Richard Linklater’s 1993 cult film did much more than take us back to the carefree summer of ’76 it introduced us to Matthew McConaughey.
The actor was just 23-years-old at the time of the film’s release, which makes him even younger but no less studly in these recently-released audition tapes.
In the video above, we can admire Greek-god-reincarnated McConaughey’s first interpretations of the immortal stoner David “Wood” Wooderson. His smooth Texan drawl and effortlessly chill imitation of being high make him a perfect choice for the role, which McConaughey went on to perfect for the final cut of the movie.
With his golden flow and MTV Headbangers Ball T-Shirt, it’s a real treat to see this vintage footage of the current A-list Academy Award winner alongside fellow co-star Wiley Wiggins (who has even less presence than the amateur McConaughey).

Did you see this video of a young McConaughey yet? ‘Cause it’d be a whole lot cooler if you did…
