A scary statistic recently has shown that between eleven and twenty percent of veterans who served in Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom missions suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Erick Scott is one of those veterans and at first was very skeptical of the diagnosis until he joined K9s for Warriors and adopted Gumbo.
Gumbo’s main job is to notify Erick when he’s about to have a panic attack or show any symptoms of PTSD. In the video, as Erick recalls the upsetting diagnosis from doctors, you can see Gumbo sense his agitation and climb up to comfort him. It’s pretty incredible. Veterans like Erick come from all over the country to Florida to be paired with a service dog with no cost to them. The program is so popular that their wait list is over a year long.
