You Won’t Believe How Hard This Is For Khloe
It’s easy to rag on Khloe Kardashian for having it all, but remember that behind the persona that is sold to us is a real person who we know nothing about, and who in many ways has suffered a lot of trauma. For Khloe, Lamar’s coma signifies another link in the chain of men that she’s lost in her life, and that really matters.
To understand what Khloe is really going through right now, let’s look at some of the men in her life starting close to home, with the family.
Her Father: Robert Kardashian Sr.
Khloe’s father, Robert Kardashian, famous for defending OJ Simpson in his murder trial, divorced Kris in 1991 when Khloe was just 7 years old. Divorce is never easy on children, especially anyone as young as Khloe was when her parents split.
When Rob Kardashian died of cancer in 2003, it seemed like Khloe took it the hardest of all. In 2007, Khloe was arrested for a DUI on an episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians, and cited her sadness about the approaching anniversary of her father’s death as the cause.
Common sense could tell you this, but studies done by the Institute for Family Studies show that father-daughter relationships in childhood will affect how women approach their goals in life, deal with their stress (i.e. Khloe’s binge drinking), and how they choose and carry out their romantic relationships.
Her Step-Father: Bruce Jenner
In the KUWTK episode “About Bruce,” the family discussed their reactions to Bruce’s announcement that he was transitioning into a woman.
Many people familiar with the trans community would agree with how Khloe and her sisters felt about the news: they wanted to support Bruce in expressing his true self, but at the same time, dealing with the transition was like dealing with a death in the family — because Bruce would never be the same person again.
Imagine what a toll that must have taken on Khloe psychologically — especially having lost her father so young. Bruce promised Khloe’s father on his death bed that he would take care of his children. Obviously, Caitlyn is still in Khloe’s life to love and support her — but from a very different place than before.
Her True Love: Lamar Odom
The world was shocked when Khloe and Lamar tied the knot in 2009 only a month after meeting, but for some, it’s really love at first sight. The marriage lasted four years, with Khloe filing for divorce in 2013.
Just this past July, in an interview with Complex, Khloe admitted that “Lamar’s gonna always be that person [for me], but that’s what made it so special.” In the same interview, she went on to add “Oh my god, I miss him every day.”
Following yesterday’s news that Odom is in a coma, Khloe is no doubt feeling some responsibility and guilt for the emotional state that drove Lamar into such an unhealthy place.
As Khloe remains at Lamar’s side in the hospital and updates about his condition don’t indicate any improvement, there’s got to be a lot of “what if’s” streaming through her mind right now. Khloe is a strong woman, but she’s had a bad pattern of luck with the men in her life.
For all of Khloe’s insecurities, feeling like she’s the outsider among her sisters, dealing with the death of her father, and not to mention her brother Rob always hiding out, Khloe’s coping mechanism has always been to put on the tough act that’s become her reality show character type. Even now, as the real Khloe Kardashian at the hospital with Lamar in emotional turmoil, she has to worry about what Reality Star Khloe will have to say about the whole ordeal — whether it turns out for the better or for worse.
With Lamar’s life on the line, one can only pray for his recovery and for Khloe’s strength throughout all of this, and try to remember the vulnerable human that is behind the kurtain.
Oh my god, we feel so bad for Khloe!
