Matthew McConaughey lost over 21lbs for his role in Dallas Buyers Club, and strutted off with an Oscar. George Clooney used a pasta-heavy diet to gain 35lbs for Syriana–and also walked away toting his golden guy. Now, it’s Jennifer Aniston’s turn at a physically transformative role–and the A-list actress is going on screen without makeup.

Last month at the Toronto Film Festival Aniston started receiving potentially career-changing Oscar buzz for her role in the movie Cake, in which she plays a dark comedic character plagued by chronic pain. After the film’s screening, crowds jumped to their feet to laud the Friends megastar–so does this mean that “Rachel” will make her transition from a date-night Madonna (in something like We’re the Millers) to films that are little more high brow? She’s proved her chops before in indie flicks like The Good Girl, but this could be her McConaughey-moment to show off everything she’s got.

Aniston, who had THE look during her Friends years, and still manages to blow us away with her beauty now, describes her lack of glam in the film as, “so fabulous—so dreamy and empowering and liberating. The only time I had to sit in the makeup chair was just for the scars.”

Even though Variety didn’t offer gleaming reviews of the picture, it’s sure to grab some attention as we move into Oscar season.

Will Jennifer’s physical transformation for the movie Cake bring her a big slice of Oscar recognition? Find out what she did to her look…
