No it’s not a 2 day late April Fools joke. David Letterman has officially announced that he will retire.

After 22 years the talk show host, 66, will give his final sign off in 2015.

Letterman said that on Thursday his first call was to CBS chief, Les Moonves and he said “Lesley, its been great, you’ve been great, the network has been great, but I’m retiring.”

His bandleader, Paul Schaffer, sounded somewhat surprised when he announced this however its very likely he knew well before he aired his speech.

What this means now, is that Paul and I can be married,” Letterman said. He went on to say, “We don’t have the timing of this preciesly down, it will be, I think, at least a year or so.”

The audience, who also seemed somewhat shocked and silent at the announcement, ended up in a standing ovation at the Ed Sullivan Theater.
