Every time you finish a romantic movie, aren’t you left just wishing that the beautiful, tear-jerking plot could be true for once?
Well maybe it can.
Jourdan Barovick and Ryan Spencer, both of New Jersey, grew up about 45 minutes from each other and met on a blind date in 2004. Things worked out, and they were married in 2007. They now have three children: a six-year-old, a three-year-old, and a baby of five months.
But it wasn’t until years into their marriage that the Spencers realized the true magic behind their love for each other, and it came in the form of a home video from 1988.
Both partners knew that their families had taken similar vacations to the Sesame Place theme park in Pennsylvania during their youths, but they were shocked to find that, while watching home footage from Jourdan’s family trip in 1988, a 13-year-old Ryan enters the shot and stands directly in front of the camera.
“I got a chill at first,” Ryan said. “I couldn’t believe it was me, and then it became kind of a romantic thing.”
After watching and re-watching the video and comparing the boy to pictures of Ryan in his youth, both families are certain of the coincidence, if you can call it that. Jourdan said their first reaction was as follows:
“We did a complete double-take. We paused, we rewound, we paused, we rewound, over and over again. We told everyone we knew.”
But the Spencers had another encounter with fate when the home video went missing. The VHS, which was being kept in Jourdan’s parents’ home, was lost around the same time as Hurricane Sandy, and the couple assumed that it was damaged by the flooding and perhaps gone forever.
Then, earlier this month, the amazing video popped back up after the family transferred old VHS tapes onto DVDs, and the priceless recording was among the recovered footage.
It’s especially impressive to think that this happened on home video back in 1988. Just imagine how many photos and videos you inadvertently end up in today since people are constantly recording their lives on their phones, GoPros, and other technology.
So was this destiny? According to Jourdan,
“I do believe that everything happens for a reason and that people come into our lives when they’re meant to and leave when they’re meant to, and obviously were were supposed to meet again. Our paths crossed more than once.”
The jury is still out on whether or not true love really exists, but in the words of Hemingway,
