On the morning of December 7, 1941, the American naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii was attacked by more than 350 Japanese fighter planes and bombers. In a devastating a two-hour ambush, the Japanese force damaged or destroyed around 20 ships and 200 aircraft and inflicted 3,500 casualties. Amidst the chaos and confusion, there were many Americans who were able to act quickly and courageously to limit the damage and save hundreds of lives.
