Last night’s series finale of How I Met Your Mother delivered one final twist that left fans shocked and a bit bewildered.

The entire time we, the audience, have been asking, “Who is she (the mother)”? While Ted’s kids have been asking, “Why do you keep talking about Aunt Robin so much?”

Turns out that Ted did end up marrying Tracy, but she fell ill and had passed away six year prior to when Ted initiated this (9 year) conversation with his kids. The series creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas have made it known how that they intended to end the show from where it started.

One of the final scenes with the Mosby kids was filmed at the same time the show first aired nine years ago. They say, “Mom’s barely in this story, dad. This is all about how you’re in love with Aunt Robin.” Ted’s kids end up encouraging him to ask Aunt Robin out on a date. And so Mosby does, blue trumpet and all.

Now we know why Bays and Thomas never let Ted and Robin go.
