Sometimes, Love is All You Need
Some say that laughter is the best medicine, and none believe that more than Bob Carey, the famous man in the pink tutu. For the past 10 years, Bob has been traveling the world photographing himself in his famous tutu for a good cause.
It all started out as one loving husband’s mission to make his wife smile. When Bob’s wife, Linda, was diagnosed with breast cancer, the photographer knew he had to do something to bring his wife joy – so he packed a camera, a pink tutu, and all his love, and he hit the road.
Bob said that as much as his project was meant to bring some relief to his sick wife, it was also a coping mechanism for himself, while his wife, his life partner, his best friend, was suffering – and what a beautiful thing this man’s coping mechanism became.
“When Linda would go for treatment, she would take the images on her phone, and the women would look at them, and it would make them laugh and make the time pass,” Bob said about his zany photoshoots.
The photos are not only hilarious, but they’re stunning pieces of art. They’ve been shared millions of times all over the world, and now, Bob isn’t the only one stepping into a Tutu to help cancer patients.
Bob’s project has grown into something so much bigger than he ever could have imagined. Using the hashtag #Dare2Tutu, people all over the world are challenging one another to put on a tutu and take photos — all creating awareness for The Carey Foundation, a nonprofit that raises money to provide funding for cancer patients to cover the costs that aren’t covered by insurance, like counseling, transportation, and daycare.
Today, Linda is still alive and laughing with her husband Bob, and in the end, they’ve learned a lot from her cancer. “Oddly enough, her cancer has taught us that life is good,” Bob said. “Dealing with it can be hard, and sometimes the very best thing — no, the only thing — we can do to face another day is to laugh at ourselves and share a laugh with others.”
