Neil Patrick Harris Performs at Tony Awards

There were exciting moments for this year’s Tony Awards at Radio City Hall in New York. Audra McDonald won her sixth Tony Award, the most any actor has received, but it was more commendable when Neil Patrick Harris had his moment of glory.

Harris no longer assumed the role as the host of the show. After handing off the microphone several times in the past to other Tony winners, Harris finally received recognition for his work taking home his first Tony Award for best performance by an actor in a leading role of a musical. The role he is awarded for is Hedwig in the musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch. The audience cheered the loudest when Harris took the stage and began his speech by saying humorouslyA year ago I was hosting the Tonys  – this is crazypants!”

The How I Met Your Mother superstar seemed less emotional than the six-time winner McDonald but portrayed his excitement with a hint of coolness. After being handed his award nothing could take that glorious smile off his face.

I felt like his interests were less in the award itself and more in the opportunity of playing Hedwig and extending his gratitude to those closest to him. He stated, “playing Hedwig is an absolute joy, I was terrified at first but it has changed me and challenged me and exhausted me… The character is so beautiful and the songs are so amazing to sing.”

Who delivered a better opening act? Hugh Jackman or Neil Patrick Harris. Be sure to check out the videos below.
