Charlie Day and Sandra Bullock both stood before 2014 graduates over the past week and Emma Watson graduated from Brown University this past weekend. Now it was another Hollywood superstar turn to take the podium.

Comedian Jim Carrey, 52, received an honorary degree of Doctor of Fine Arts Honoris Causa from the Maharishi University of Management in Fairfield, Iowa and delivered a funny but touching and honest speech to the graduates letting them in on his secret to success, “letting the universe know what you want and working toward it. Your job is not to figure out how it’s going to happen for you, it’s opening a door in your head, and when the door opens in real life, just walk through it.”

The actor praised his father, Percy Carrey, for his approach to life, career and success. “I learned many great lessons from my father, not the least of which was that you could fail at what you don’t love, so you might as well take a chance on doing what you love.”

He also explained that his reason for choosing comedy as a career was when his father lost his accounting job when Carrey was only 12 and the family “had to do whatever we could to survive,” he said. “My father could have been a great comedian, but he didn’t believe that that was possible for him, and so he made a conservative choice. Instead, he got a safe job as an accountant,” he went on to say.

“The decisions we make in this moment are based in either love or fear,” he continued. “So many of us chose our path out of fear disguised as practicality. What we really want seems impossibly out of reach and ridiculous to expect so we never ask the universe for it. I’m saying I’m the proof that you can ask the universe for it. And if it doesn’t happen for you right away, it’s only because the universe is so busy fulfilling my order.”
