Lady Gaga knows how to keep a good thing simple. Following her epic Grammy performance of The Sound of Music – she continues to prove to us that underneath her eccentric persona there’s a helluva-a-lot of heart and talent.

John Lennon’s landmark song “Imagine” reminds us of a world without religion, borders, nationalities or material possessions – a message well-suited for the world stage during the opening ceremony of the 2015 European Games in Baku, Azerbaijan (basically the Euro-Only Olympics) Because of the song’s resonance, it’s become one of the 100 most performed songs of the 20th century, making it the perfect choice for Gaga to add to her repertoire.

Not only did Lady Gaga take ownership of Lennon’s words, but she kept the performance rooted in its simplicity. Just one piano, bedecked in flowers, and Gaga, barefoot in flowing white fabrics. No crazy wig, no crazy makeup, no meat dress – no mask. Just a simple melody and a poem.

This performance is absolutely breathtaking.
