Gay or straight, it’s never too late to get married. Comedian and actress Lily Tomlin, 74, proved just this when she married long-term sweetheart Jane Wagner, 78, this month. The couple had a private ceremony in Los Angeles, according to E! News, which reports that the newlyweds are very happy.
The loving couple have been together for an astonishing 42 years. So why get married now? They must have been doing something right to have such a long-lasting relationship. Why take a chance on messing up a good thing by changing what has been working for them for so long?
Well, for one thing, Tomlin never expected that gay marriage would become legal in her lifetime. And then this past June, the Supreme Court decision, which Tomlin called “pretty remarkable,” made gay marriage legal in California.
For Lily and Jane, marriage is just the icing on the cake of their long-time love. Tomlin said she didn’t have to get married, but that it would be “awfully nice.” Her friends who got married told her that it did make a difference in their lives and that they felt happier after tying the knot.
Who is Jane Wagner?
Jane is a talented writer who has won enough awards to fill a very long shelf, including three Emmys. She was a winner right out of the gate, with her first professional writing job, an after school special for CBS, gaining her a prestigious Peabody Award.
At the time, Lily Tomlin was a star on the mega-hit show “Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In,” a cheeky comedy show that was an icon of the late 60s and early 70s. Tomlin was famous for her character portrayals and was looking for help in writing material for an upcoming comedy album, and she turned to rising writing star Wagner for help.
The rest is history. First they started working together, then later came love. Now, 42 years later, not only do they still love each other, but they are still working together too.
New Year’s Eve
The wedding was held on New Year’s Eve, a romantic choice that also ensures that no one will ever forget their anniversary date! News of the wedding was first revealed publicly by gossip columnist Liz Smith, who wrote, “And my longtime friends, Lily Tomlin and her love, the writer Jane Wagner, got married on the eve of 2014. … My wish is that their happiness will be as great as their combined talents.” She even tweeted the happy news.

Lily and Jane are an inspiration to anyone who thinks that being in your 70s means you have to spend your time parked in a rocking chair. Both of them are still raring to go. The two talented writers both contribute to the website wowOwow. Lily is still acting, with recent appearances on HBO’s “Eastbound and Down,” and a co-starring role in ABC’s “Malibu Country.”
Congratulations Lily and Jane!
