And You Thought Your Dog Enjoyed a Ride In the Car…

Doggy paddling just got a lot easier thanks to pet owner David Bahnson.

A Vermont local and kayaking aficionado David Bahnson realized that the only thing that was missing while he was enjoying his favorite hobby, kayaking, was his dogs, so he designed a new way to share his pastime with his best friends by designing a one-of-a-kind kayak to bring them along for the ride.

Bahnson first noticed how much he enjoyed bringing his ‘kids’ along when he saw how easily his dog Susie fit into the storage compartment on a kayak he had built with an at-home kit. Bahnson then added a ring (or “coaming”) around the opening in the boat where Susie sat to keep her dry and safe as they journeyed with him across the water together. After Bahnson’s family grew a bit bigger with the addition of their later dog, Ginger, Bahnson simply added another hole in the boat so she wouldn’t get left out.

“They seem to love it,” Bahnson told The Dodo. “They get excited when we’d pull the kayaks out and see that we were going.” If you think your dogs get excited over jumping in the car for a ride, just imagine how they’d feel jumping in a kayak.

But Bahnson also made safety a priority by making sure both dogs were excellent swimmers, and training them to be careful to deal with the boat.

“They are trained to get in the kayak themselves on command. They sit down, and off we go. When we come ashore, they’ll stay seated until I tell them it’s OK to get out. They never hopped out into the water, actually,” says Bahnson.

Sadly, both of Bahnson’s his original boating pups have moved on (after many days of adventuring with him on the water.) But Bahnson has continued to go on his kayak pet-scursions with the family’s newer animals.

“I love my dogs. I love training them, the companionship. We’ve gone miles and miles of paddling with our dogs,” said Bahnson. “They just really enjoy going places.”

The only problem is, they don’t help out too much with the paddling.
