Clint Eastwood’s American Sniper tells a story about the military career of Navy SEAL Chris Kyle, who had more than 150 confirmed kills before his untimely death in 2013. Bradley Cooper, who plays the lead role in the film, had to learn about the physical and emotional battle his character went through while serving four tours in Iraq before returning home.

The second trailer was recently released, and it portrays the intensity and emotional strife that Cooper’s character had to overcome upon his return home from battle. Post-traumatic stress disorder is an big issue among many war veterans, and although they may be honorably discharged from frontlines, the battle never ends there. At Monday’s New York City premiere of the film, Cooper spoke about his experience. He stated:

It was just an honor. There’s something about how stoic he was, and it was all sort of in his eyes as a human being, how gentle he was, how complicated he was, and it was really sort of a practice in almost doing nothing and just sort of trusting that whatever’s going inside is going to read.

The American Sniper’s widow Taya and their two children attended the screening. She was amazed with the focus and detail that went into the making of the film and was happy with the end result. She told People Magazine“I felt a sense of contentment that they did it right.” The film’s screenwriter, Jason Hall, also commented on her emotions, saying:

Taya came out of the movie crying. She gave me a big hug and said, ‘I just spent two hours with my husband. You all brought my husband back to life.’ It was a really good feeling.

Cooper’s final words summed up the amount of time and energy that went into the making of this film, making it a project that Warner Bros., Eastwood, and the rest of film’s crew can be proud about. Cooper said, “It was the responsibility I had to his family to preserve his legacy that weighed on me.” Kyle’s legacy will forever live on. His story can also be better understood through an Autobiography about his U.S. Military service.

Theaters gear up for an enormous sold-out attendance upon the movie’s release on Christmas Day, December 25th.
