The king of cocaine, George Jung, 71, was released from the Federal Correction Institution in Fort Dix, New Jersey yesterday after serving 20 years behind bars for possession of 796 kilos of cocaine.

You may be familiar with his story if you’ve seen Ted Demme’s 2001 film Blow, starring Johnny Depp as Jung. Demme’s film chronicles the infamous drug smuggler and his rise and fall from power. George Jung was “credited with establishing the U.S. cocaine market in the 1970s and ’80s” and “was believed to be responsible for nearly 90 percent of the coke in America at the time.”

Talk about cornering the market and working with some of the most dangerous players in the game, the Medellín Cartel, Jung’s story was made for the big screen.

Jung’s release date was originally scheduled on November 27, 2014, but he was pardoned early on June 2, 2014. Jung remains at “a halfway house on the west coast to help with transitioning back into society”. Regardless, the ex-drug smuggler now can enjoy his 72nd birthday in August as a free man.

In an interview with Johnny Depp, he says emphatically,  “I believe he’s paid his debt to society, and now it would be nice to get him out of prison so that he can try and pay his debt to his family.”

I wonder if he will ever get to re-establish a relationship with his daughter, Kristina Sunshine Jung, again. She had a cameo appearance in the movie, although her scene was ultimately cut, but can be seen in the DVD extras. It would make my day to hear more positive news for this ex-convict.

After the movie Blow premiered, some believed it would make Jung famous. Well, his name and the word “blow” has gone viral all over Twitter and many will be making an effort to watch or re-watch Johnny Depp’s amazing performance as Boston George.

If you have not seen the movie already, check out the Official Trailer below and read the full PBS interview with George Jung.
