Disney starlet turned A-list celebrity and chart topping music artist Selena Gomez has been keeping a suspiciously low profile in recent months. Fans and the media alike have been speculating about the cause of her hiatus, and she’s finally had enough. In an interview with Billboard magazine, Gomez revealed why she’s been hiding out all this time: “I was diagnosed with lupus, and I’ve been through chemotherapy. That’s what my break was really about. I could’ve had a stroke,” she said in the interview.

What Is Lupus?

Lupus is a chronic disease that affects about 1.5 million Americans today. It typically occurs in people between the ages of 15 and 40, and can dramatically affect body systems related to blood, the heart, skin, joints, and kidneys. Essentially, the immune system can’t function correctly and produces antibodies that attack healthy tissues in various organs of the body. Some of the symptoms of lupus include fatigue, fever, weight loss, painful joints, rash, hearing loss, anemia, abnormal bloating and mouth ulcers, and can even lead to a heart attack.

What Does This All Mean for Selena?

After all of the media speculation, Gomez said the pressure was a huge burden. “I wanted so badly to say, ‘You guys have no idea. I’m in chemotherapy. You’re a**holes.’ I locked myself away until I was confident and comfortable again.

But now, Selena is back and with the debut of her new album Revival just days away, she’s ready to take over the world again. The star said that she’s used her music to channel her anger and emotion. “This is my time,” she said. “I’ve deserved this. I earned it. This is all me.”

And as for us, we couldn’t be more excited for Selena. It’s so brave for her to speak openly about her battle with lupus, and she totally has the right attitude toward the speculation. It’s important for young females in Hollywood to own their own narrative rather than let the media paint a certain picture of them.

She’s taking a fresh new musical direction with her new album, and in May she’ll be embarking on a world tour promoting the album. Talk about a total power move!
