A remake for Single White Female is not in the works, however the film’s plot and themes seem to be playing out between Jennifer Lawrence and Shailene Woodley.
In Hollywood there is only so much space allocated for rising stars. When one star is rising, inevitably it must push the preceding stars out of its way. And that might be exactly what Shailene Woodley is doing to last season’s rising star, Jennifer Lawrence.
Shailene, the star of the summer blockbuster Divergent, doesn’t even have a cellphone. That’s saying something because the 22-year-old made a reported $500,000 for her leading role (JLaw made about the same in the first Hunger Games). Pretty good, huh?
Maybe even more impressive is her box office performance in The Fault in Our Stars, a film adaptation of John Green’s best-selling novel. In its opening weekend, Fault actually beat out one of the reigning kings of Hollywood, Tom Cruise, out performing Edge of Tomorrow by $20 million. If that doesn’t scream the makings of a superstar then I don’t know what does.
Shailene is not your typical Hollywood star. She was modeling at the age of four, and began acting at eight. But unlike so many child actresses she’s managed to keep her head firmly on her shoulders–or maybe its better to say that she’s kept her head firmly based in her own unique world.
Shailene is infamous for giving her representation the slip, and completely dropping off the radar for weeks on end. Last December she said she was going camping in New Zealand, but instead just stayed in town and couch surfed at her friends places. Her eccentricities don’t stop there. She brushes her teeth with her her own concoction of toothpaste made from clay; she collects her water from a secret mountain spring; and she sunbathes in the nude to give her vagina “a little vitamin D.” Think that’s weird? Well some of us like weird, and the proof of that is in her quickly growing fan base.
Maybe what’s most interesting is Shailene may have Jennifer Lawrence to thank for some of her success. Shailene balked when Lionsgate offered her the lead role in Divergent. It was actually JLaw who coaxed her into taking the role, saying, “Yes, there are some hard things, but there are so many beautiful things that will come from an opportunity like this.”
JLaw may be regretting her advice, because she has recently sent signals that she’s intimidated by Shailene’s success. JLaw was upset when she discovered that Shailene had copied her famous pixie cut. Well, we hate to break it to you JLaw, but Shailene actually had the cut first. Looks like Shailene may not be ahead JLaw yet, but she’s definitely nipping at her heels.
Could Shailene and JLaw top Bridget Fonda and Jennifer Jason Leigh in a remake? Find out.
