Eddie Redmayne’s biggest fan in the universe is out there somewhere, and it might just be Stephen Hawking.
The world-renowned physicist and cosmologist may be 73 years old, but that doesn’t mean he can’t love Eddie (33) just as much as the rest of us. When Redmayne won the Oscar for Best Actor for portraying Hawking in The Theory of Everything, he was personally congratulated by the real Hawking via Facebook. The message conveyed how proud the scientist, who was diagnosed with motor neurone disease (ALS) when he was just 21 years old, is of the young actor.
Eddie, who could barely contain his geeky excitement upon winning, acknowledged that he is a “lucky, lucky man” and dedicated the award to everybody who suffers from ALS and, more specifically, to “Stephen, Jane, Jonathan, and the Hawking children.”
And this isn’t the first time that Stephen Hawking has expressed his pride in Eddie. The two met during filming after Redmayne had spent months researching his character, mannerisms, and likeness. Naturally, they formed a special bond, especially since the film did so well this award season. Redmayne himself won the Best Actor awards at the Golden Globes, the BAFTAs, and the SAG Awards, among others. Throughout the movie’s production and reception, Hawking hasn’t been afraid to show his support for Eddie and The Theory of Everything‘s cast.
These posts are so heartwarming and truly show the beauty – and significance – of film.
