In Emotional Performance, Taylor Honors Cancer Victim

There wasn’t a dry eye in the house on Monday night at Taylor Swift’s 1989 tour stop in Arizona as the singer performed “Ronan.” The song is about a young boy named Ronan whose mother documented his battle with, and eventual death from, cancer in an online blog, which inspired Swift to write the song. This was only Swift’s second time ever performing the song in public since it was released in 2012.

Ronan’s mother, Maya Thompson, was in the audience at the packed stadium as Swift shared the story of the song with the crowd. “I wouldn’t on half as much as I know about childhood cancer and childhood cancer research if she hadn’t shared her story  about her son, Ronan.” Ronan was diagnosed with Stage 4 neuroblastoma in August, 2010, and he passed away less than a year later in May, 2011 – three days before his 4th birthday.

Since encountering the blog, “Rockstar Ronan,” Swift has become somewhat of a champion for cancer research, in recent years making visits and donations to her dedicated fans battling cancer. In July, she even donated $50,000 to an 11-year-old fan who is battling cancer.

However, Swift’s relationship with cancer has become much more intimate recently – in April, Swift announced on her blog that her own mother had been diagnosed with cancer.

“The results came in, and I’m saddened to tell you that my mom has been diagnosed with cancer. I’d like to keep the details of her condition and treatment plans private, but she wanted you to know … Your parents may be too busy juggling everything they’ve got going on to go to the doctor, and maybe you reminding them to geo get checked for cancer could possibly lead to an early diagnosis and an easier battle … I hope and pray that you never get news like this. Love, Taylor.”

“I’ve had cancer hit really close to me in my family,” Swift told the audience in Arizona. “So, because Maya’s right there, I would like you to give her a round of applause, please.”

Maya was extremely grateful to Swift, taking to Instagram following the performance to express her gratitude. “”I still can’t believe you did this. This will forever be one of the most special moments of my life. Thank you @taylorswift for your beautiful heart and for never forgetting my Ro. I love you to the moon and back.”

Taylor gives so much back to her fans, and they want to give their love and support back to her in return. The hashtag “#PrayForMamaSwift” has been trending on Twitter, with fans and fellow celebs alike expressing their support for Taylor’s mom.
