Esmeralda Amanda Gosling, the daughter of Eva Mendes and Ryan Gosling, has the most interesting name in Hollywood and Mendes explained the story behind the name an interview with Violet Grey. The couple have been extremely private with their relationship and their daughter for quite some time, with news only breaking that they were pregnant with their first child back in July when Mendes was already 7 months pregnant and then the exciting arrival of little Esmeralda in September.
It is a exciting to finally have an opportunity to hear from Mendes about her experience as a mother thus far. The 40 year-old actress said:
“For me that part of being a mother at this early stage is the struggle of not being able to sleep and not knowing what I’m doing and really going through it with her and battling out those nights. I thought my wild nights were over but these are some of the wildest nights I’ve ever had.”
The actress was quite jovial about her newly learned responsibility. She humored the situation by announcing that being a mother to her seems easier than being a baby, telling Violet Grey that it is “way harder to be a baby. Everything is a struggle for her. For instance, I haven’t thrown up since the ‘90s and she’s thrown up twice since we started this interview. Motherhood is cake compared to what it’s like to be a baby.”
It is a pleasure to here that even though they may have celebrity status and the perfect couple, that Mendes and Gosling are just like the rest of us and struggle with the same things any other new parents do. Before the end of the interview Violet Grey was able to reveal the secret behind Esmeralda’s name. Mendes revealed that her daughter’s first name was taken from Victor Hugo’s 1831 romantic novel The Hunchback of Notre Dame, which has been made into a film 14 separate times. Her daughter’s middle name, Amanda, derives from her grandmother’s first name. Mendes said:
“We both love the Esmeralda character from the Victor Hugo novel The Hunchback of Notre Dame and just think it’s a beautiful name. Her middle is Amada, which was my grandmother’s name. It means ‘beloved’ in Spanish.”
The name sure is a beautiful and special one. There is no doubt that their daughter will learn to love her name and the story behind it.
